Overview of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

OCD includes two major types of symptoms:
Obsessions and Compulsions.
You can experience both symptoms, or only one of the two.

Obsessions are thoughts or images that keep occurring over and over again. They’re often referred to as intrusive thoughts, and they can often lead to feelings of anxiety and-, or shame. Some of the most common obsessions:

  • Fear of coming in contact with germs, dirt, or bodily fluids
  • Unwanted thoughts of a violent or sexual nature
  • Fear of losing control and acting on negative compulsions
  • Excessive concern about having things “just so”, exact and even.
  • Worried about offending God
  • Fear of acting out intrusive thoughts and harming self or others

Compulsions are behaviors that you perform according to a rigid set of rules. You belief that carrying out your compulsions will reduce anxiety.

Some common compulsions include:

  • Excessive cleaning/washing
  • Repeating certain activities a set number of times.
  • Arranging and rearranging items until they just right
  • Reviewing situations over and over again
  • Excessive checking

Treatment:

CBT and Exposure and prevention therapy will help you to overcome intrusive thoughts and obsessive and/or compulsive behaviours. On average it will take 15 to 20 sessions, but your therapist will discuss your progress with you on an ongoing basis.
